Do you have an interest in age estimation technology and how this can be used in the real world?

This exciting opportunity working with the University of Kent and Ingenium Biometric Laboratories will see you using your programming skills and knowledge of methodologies in mathematics, computing and biometric technologies, in a project to develop a software framework for testing age estimation technology (AET), an important step in enabling the use of AET in an increasing range of applications where age verification is a commercial and statutory necessity.

Based in Canterbury and supervised by both Dr Chris Allgrove from Ingenium and Professor Richard Guest from the School of Engineering at the University of Kent, we are looking for someone with a PhD (or near completion) in image processing, biometrics, security, machine learning or a related discipline, and the ability to write for publications, present research proposals and results to non-scientific audiences, to contribute to this impactful project.

As Research Associate - Age Verification/Biometrics you will get involved in:

undertaking research to define a testing methodology for the assessment of AET systems
developing a software framework for the assessment of AET systems
communicating the outputs to key stakeholders
You will be able to bring to the role:

experience of robust software development including strong programming skills in Python or C++
knowledge of biometric technologies, computer imaging and statistical analysis methodologies
proven time management skills and the ability to work independently and creatively to resolve problems
In return we can offer you a generous training and personal development programme and full support from experts in the academic and business teams involved in the project, along with a range of excellent staff benefits.

This post is full-time and for a fixed term of 24 months. It is part funded by Innovate UK under the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) programme. More information about KTPs and the many benefits of being a KTP Associate can be found on the KTP website.

Ingenium Biometric Laboratories was founded in 2019 to provide testing, research and development, consultancy, and training services that combine a deep identity expertise in policy, technology and markets with practical insights to help clients solve identity challenges. We are proud to be global leaders in the fields of digital identity, biometrics, cyber security, digital forensics and document authentication working with a diverse client base and driven by the belief that biometric and identity technologies can make a positive difference to countries, industries and users.

The School of Engineering at the University of Kent is part of the Division of Computing, Engineering and Mathematical Sciences. Our research is managed through four groups: Communications; Instrumentation and Control; Biomedical Engineering; and Mechanical Engineering. The School is engaged in high-quality research with significant national and international impact while offering excellent opportunities for graduate studies.

In addition to the standard pre-employment clearances for the appointment, all candidates will be subject to a criminal records check and further security checks defined by the Cabinet Office, as part of their Baseline Personnel Security Standard. Individuals will usually need to have been resident in the UK for at least the last three years to enable appropriate checks to be carried out and produce a result which provides the required level of assurance.
