Background

The School of Creative Arts and Industries sits within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Education which has an excellent quality rating and a tradition of integrating practice with theory, and creativity with professionalism. In recent years, the school has increased the strength of its connections with relevant industries and institutions which has benefitted the employability prospects of students.

The school has a number of specialist spaces such as: a professional-standard studio theatre space, multiple live performance venues, music rehearsal spaces, TV studio, editing suites, dubbing suites, radio studios, and a new multi-million-pound creative arts building with recording studios, dark rooms, mac labs, games design, and art facilities.

The Role

This role is designed to support the wide range of courses within the School of Creative Arts and Industries with particular focus on Performing Arts and Music subjects; the post will be supporting student and outside performers within our many performance spaces with both lighting and sound programming/ operation. The post holder will be responsible for the maintenance and operation of the specialist equipment within the school’s wide range of facilities, working alongside other members of the technical team to provide industry level support to students and staff.

Daily duties will include technical support for the Performing Arts and Music programs within the school, setting up and maintaining equipment in our specialist spaces, sourcing stock of consumables and equipment, and working on events within the school (including some evening and weekend work).

As a Technical Instructor, the successful applicant will also be expected to lead student inductions and workshops in both lighting and audio, deliver taught sessions and timetabled practical sessions in technical modules, support student tutorials, and provide ad hoc support for classes when needed. The role will be positioned to support a range of students including one to one support and in larger classroom settings. The post holder will help deliver technical modules on the Performing Arts and Technical Production courses.

The post holder will implement Health and Safety policies within the university along with reviewing and writing risk assessments as needed.  

The Person

Applicants should have experience within the areas supported by this post; candidates should have industry knowledge and experience with technical equipment such as DMX lighting control, digital and analogue audio desks, audio visual equipment, recording studio facilities, postproduction facilities, and live entertainment systems. The school use ETC Eos software as their main lighting control system – applicants should be proficient in basic Eos control including programming of moving lights and intelligent fixtures.

Work will include lifting of heavy objects and working at height; industry qualifications/ experience in these areas is desired but training can be provided.
