Advocacy for All is a well-established charity which, for the last 24 years, has been enabling individuals to have ‘bigger voices and better lives’ through the means of 1:1 advocacy and group support.

We are currently offering an exciting opportunity to the right person to expand our service into mental health crisis alternative projects in Kent and Medway. The aim being to improve the experiences of people with autism and mental health needs and limit the need for more mainstream mental health and service interventions.

These projects will include social groups and special interest groups such as art, wellbeing, walking and music to support individuals to have greater social opportunities and develop coping strategies to maintain and support good mental health and positive outcomes.

This post would particularly suit someone who would like to work some of their hours outside office hours giving them individual more flexible working options.

The opportunity provides a joint management and mentoring role across the project which is for initially 1 year with 2/3 years funding extension to be agreed on the success of the project.

The Crisis Coordinator will be responsible for the line management and development of Advocacy for All’s new crisis alternatives and peer support service.

We are seeking a self-motivated and enthusiastic individual with excellent communication, supervisory and organisational skills with a focus on self-advocacy. A sound working knowledge and understanding of mental health needs and an understanding of autism and associated conditions.

You will facilitate and organise group sessions as well as providing 1:1 support to both service users, staff and supporters in their roles within the project and service.

Using your understanding of the fluctuating nature of people’s long-term enduring mental health needs, you will manage the referral process triaging new members and assigning them to appropriate sources of support internally or externally.

Job summary

• To line manage and supervise 3 peer supporter individuals with lived experience, 2 advocates and up to 15 volunteers across the crisis
project.
• To work with the line manager to develop the programme in the first year with a view to the successful re-funding for years 2 and 3.
• Have working up to date knowledge and awareness of safeguarding issues, alerts and follow up procedures.
• To support peer supporters, volunteers and members to learn and develop self-coping skills to prevent escalation into further crisis and
more critical mental health services.
• To line manage and facilitate organisation of group sessions and peer support meetings.
• To promote the crisis alternative service in the wider community. Aiming to make the service accessible for hard to reach individuals and
areas of the community.
• To work with the AfA referrals team and the Kent partners in a clear and robust way to take on appropriate referrals at a rate that is
manageable and agreed within the project.
• To work at all times with the aim to link into the Kent partners, CCG and ASC teams and projects that compliment and stream line crisis
services in this project and across Kent and Medway as a whole.
• To work as part of the wider senior AfA team and attend meetings as may be required.
• Active daily use and application of databases within AfA and also with partner organisations.

The Crisis Coordinator will:

• Line manage peer supporters, volunteers and advocates; providing regular support and supervision including inductions, training,
appraisals and monitoring reports. To ensure as required the ongoing recruitment to the level of required volunteers for this service
• Work with the line manager to develop and further the project, promoting user involvement at all possible stages. Develop ideas for further
funding to enable extra bolt on activities and support to this project, to further enhance the deliverable outcomes
• Publicise and promote the project throughout various organisations and the wider community
• Work with peer supporters, volunteers and members to plan and develop group and 1:1 sessions / styles of support
• Support members to have a voice within the project and wider community, with a view to further enhance self-coping skills to prevent
need for further crisis support
• Respond and react to safeguarding situations and alerts as required
• Enable peer supporters and members to ‘buddy’ together for peer support and identify good and appropriate matches for this support
• Provide support through evening, weekend, bank holidays as well as day time monthly meetings
• Organise and facilitate speakers on relevant issues which may prevent and ease crisis situations
• Work in line with Advocacy for All’s policies and procedures. Support and attend presentations, conferences and other meetings. Keep
good, clear records as well as appropriate management of database programmes
• Do any other work as reasonably requested by Line Manager and Chief Executive
• Work as part of the AfA team and support other groups if required to cover sickness or annual leave.

What type of person should the Crisis Alternatives Coordinator be?

Experience

• Supporting self-advocacy projects and mental health services
• Working with and supporting adults and young people on the Autistic spectrum
• Developing new ideas and projects and link into other partnerships and maintain good communication and working relationships. Identify
funding needs and opportunities to develop projects.
• Responding to individuals in mental health crisis situations and supporting staff, peer supporters and volunteers to also respond to these
situations
• Supporting individuals to find coping strategies when in Mental Health crisis
• Working with groups and 1:1 support
• Raising and responding to safeguarding situations and alerts
• Supervising and appraising staff
• Proficient understanding of various digital software; use of Zoom and Microsoft Teams. Capable to undertake calls for meetings and
support as part of the project. Able to keep and utilise records from the AfA database
• Report writing and monitoring and providing evidence of key performance indicators (KPI’s) and tangible outcomes for the service

Essential criteria

• Experience of working in mental health support services/settings
• Able to establish a good working relationship with a wide range of people and communicate effectively with people with a range of
disabilities including learning difficulty, Autism, Asperger’s as well as meeting their individual needs
• Have good IT skills including Microsoft Word, Publisher, Access, Excel, PowerPoint as well as Zoom and Team’s platforms for service
delivery at times when face to face is not available or appropriate and to support others in this as required
• Produce and use different forms of communication media and easy read documents, knowing how to present information to people in a
way that is good for them including report writing and monitoring reports in a timely way
• Must be able to work flexible /out of hours including weekends evenings and Bank Holidays
• Good problem solver
• Organised and resourceful. Keep clear records.
• Be a good listener, be helpful and be calm. Support members to make decisions and identify their own needs and what support they may
need while in crisis
• Work and liaise with a wide range of people, to work sensitively with different groups in local communities
• Full, clean driving licence and use of car to carry out the duties of the post
• The Crisis Coordinator will be responsible for the line management and development of Advocacy for All’s new crisis alternatives and peer
support service

We are looking for an individual with:

• Experience and knowledge of mental health issues and services
• Knowledge and understanding of autism and the challenges faced by individuals with autism and ADHD
• Proven management experience
• Motivation and enthusiasm and fresh ideas to build a new service provision from its inception
• Ability to engage and enable people with lived experience /peer supporters and volunteers who will also be working alongside the team
on this project to identify best measurable outcomes.
• Flexibility to support delivery of face-to-face and virtual forms of support.
• Flexibility with working times and rota of the team in supporting the project to deliver some out of hours’ groups and 1-1 advocacy support,
as required
• Ability to deliver and support face-to-face groups travel which may include Kent areas and Medway and south east London
