Environment Technician
Reporting to: Head of Safety

Interpersonnel Recruitment are pleased to be recruiting for our client based in Dover who are seeking an experienced Environment Technician to join their team at the earliest opportunity
Job Purpose
To assist with the management of the Board’s Environmental Management System and undertake environmental monitoring within the Harbour and it’s approaches in order to provide satisfactory and safe environmental service.
Duties of the Post Holder
• To assist with the management of the ISO14001 Environmental Management System and carrying out environmental audits and inspections.
• To monitor all environmental occurrences, investigate where required and contribute to monthly statistical reports.
• To undertake or assist with routine, regular and periodic environmental surveys using the established procedures and techniques to obtain data on water quality, trawling, benthic fauna, algae, ornithology, terrestrial ecology, littoral surveying and air monitoring from designated sites within the port to ensure that environmental baselines are being complied with.
• To work with Cruise department to ensure monitoring of their waste and other activities is within guidelines.
• To visit cruise ships and liaise with their Environment officer and quayside staff to inspect waste offloading and support following waste handling best practice to promote recycling and reduce landfill waste.
• To monitor the Board’s established environmental baselines, report against these and to revise them from time-to-time in accordance with legislative changes.
• To check and control waste paperwork to ensure compliance with waste laws.
• To respond to environmental incidents, emergencies or adhoc needs within the port by undertaking additional sampling and analysis as required.
• To maintain in a methodical, efficient and up-to-date state, the GIS database and filing system, ensuring that all items are correctly logged and cross-referenced and that the data is inputted in the manner laid down in the operating manual.
• To have a good working knowledge of marine related laws, to be conversant with the Health and Safety at Work and other such legislation as are appropriate to the working environment.
• To take part in the Environment team’s environmental awareness training and public engagement activities as and when required.
• To assist with updating managers on changes in environmental legislation which are relevant to their responsibilities and activities in order to ensure compliance with statutory environmental requirements and best practice.
• To ensure that all personnel working with the post-holder carry out their duties safely, reliably and efficiently.
• To prepare reports and publications as directed.
• To assess and write risk assessments.
• In addition to the duties and responsibilities listed, the jobholder is required to perform other duties assigned by SHEQ managers from time-to-time. Such duties will, however, be reasonable in relation to the jobholder’s skills, ability and status.
• To comply with environmental instructions and to identify potential risks to the environment, or areas where environmental impact can be reduced.
• To comply with all the safety instructions and to accept responsibility for your own safety and the safety of other who may be affected by what you do. To identify potential risks in the work area, and to report such risks promptly to management.
• To be part of the on call rota

ESSENTIAL DESIRABLE
Relevant Qualifications
BSc in Environmental, Marine Environmental or Science Discipline.
PIEMA or willing to work towards it.
Field and practical experience in environmental monitoring
Experience of auditing
To be familiar with and have knowledge of marine environmental management and monitoring techniques.
To have an understanding of the relationships between species, ecosystems, habitats and the natural and anthropogenic causes and influences on them.
To be familiar with environmental law
Have a general knowledge and understanding of GIS.
To have an understanding of the relationship between the weather and ocean conditions.
To have a background knowledge of coastal hydrography.
Experience of waste compliance
Experience of water sampling and analysis of results
General Skills and Abilities
General computer skills.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
Ability to work near/on the water and on floating craft.
Ability to communicate easily and with confidence.
Ability to work methodically and with attention to detail.
Ability to conduct statistical analysis for reporting
Ability to write reports
Ability to meet deadlines
Full UK Driving Licence
Good public speaker with the ability to deliver training courses/presentations.
Physically able to climb in and out of small vessels
To have a flexible approach to work and the working environment.
