Set in attractive buildings including the original Tudor Archbishop’s Palace, Modern Languages is a very successful faculty and a busy and thriving place to work. There are eighteen teachers and eight assistants teaching French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian, and Spanish. Three teachers currently share the German teaching, two of whom offer another language.

In the Shell year (Year 9) pupils choose two of four modern foreign languages (French, German, Mandarin, Spanish) and are required to take at least one modern language to IGCSE.

Typically around 120 pupils (of a year group of around 150) opt to study French and around 30 choose German in the Shells, with about 85 usually continuing in French and 15-20 in German to IGCSE. At present, there are 53 pupils currently taking French and over 15 pupils taking German, total, in the Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13) where we follow the AQA syllabus.

In addition to academic excellence, we pride ourselves on offering a wide variety of popular co-curricular activities. All pupils have the opportunity to join news, literature and film clubs, as well as attending extra sessions in grammar and translation. Trips are a very important feature of life in the department and all teachers in the department are expected to take responsibility for organising and leading one of these trips, which include the Remove trip to Nice and the Sixth Form trip to Berlin.

The Role
Following a resilient demand for German at GCSE and A level, a well-qualified graduate is sought to teach German at all levels, including preparation for top universities, and who can also teach another language to GCSE or higher, most usefully French or Spanish. The successful candidate will show a genuine interest in language itself and be able to demonstrate a range of language teaching techniques. The post is suitable for someone with experience or new to the profession, with or without a teaching qualification. In addition to academic excellence, the school seeks to promote excellence in all its varied co-curricular pursuits. All teachers at King’s are expected to be involved in some capacity in this programme. They are also required to contribute fully to the pastoral care of the pupils through taking on a tutor group and duties in one of the boarding or day houses.

APPLICATIONS
Applications should be submitted online at the King's School website at www.kings-school.co.uk and should include a personal statement for the Headmaster and a CV by 9am on Monday 14 September. Interviews of shortlisted candidates may take place as applications arise. If you have any difficulties accessing the internet please contact the School Office: reception@kings-school.co.uk; 01227 595501.

Those considering applying but requiring more information, can contact the Head of Modern Languages, Miss Hester Davies, for an informal discussion: hcd@kings-school.co.uk.
