The School of Engineering and Digital Arts (EDA) is launching a new undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering to complement our existing portfolio of Electronic and Computer Systems Engineering courses. At the same time the School is undertaking a multimillion pound refurbishment of its Mechanical Workshop and developing new complimentary facilities to create a modern, practical and innovative learning environment.

EDA is seeking to appoint an Engineering Workshop Technician who will provide specialist support to the Schools teaching, research and innovation activities. The role will involve working closely with students, staff and external clients on a day to day basis providing first class technical support and supervision.

You will be part of a team of engineering technicians who provide a broad range of practical engineering services across the School.

As an enthusiastic and experienced machinist you will have a comprehensive knowledge of workshop equipment and manufacturing techniques. You must be able to produce and interpret technical drawings and create prototypes and final mechanical assembles.

Acting as the lead technician in providing expert support in the use of workshop machinery including lathes, mills, welding and other related equipment within the School. You will also utilise their skills in providing practical technician led teaching to University students as well as external customers when required.

As Engineering Workshop Technician you will:

produce supporting materials such as user guides, tutorials and instructions in the effective use of workshop machinery, utilising multiple delivery methods.
deliver the teaching of practical Mechanical engineering independently and as part of a team.
ensure all mechanical and complimentary facilities are maintained to a very high standard.
develop, test and implement techniques for machining and joining special materials and fabricating prototype parts and assemblies
comply with School and University policies and procedures in relation to health and safety at work, COSHH regulations, and all local safety rules.


To be successful in this role you will have:

relevant Engineering qualifications (HNC/HND. Advanced Modern Apprenticeship or equivalent
excellent machine skills including use of lathes, mills, drills and saws.
proven experience in a Mechanical Engineering support role
good knowledge of modern engineering equipment and materials
analytical and able to solve complex technical problems

The School of Engineering & Digital Arts is part of the Faculty of Sciences and prides itself on offering excellent teaching in an environment which is also supporting world-class research in the subject areas in which we teach. We have an excellent track record of achievement in teaching, in research, and in enterprise-led activity, and we maintain strong working contacts with Academic and Industrial Organisations within the UK, in Europe, and worldwide.
