Canterbury Cathedral is one of the nation’s greatest heritage buildings and well-known all over the world. The Cathedral community welcomes more than 1 million visitors and delivers over 2,000 events and services each year, as well as employing nearly 1,000 staff and volunteers.
In 1974, Canterbury Cathedral Trust was established as a separate charity to raise funds for conservation, education and music opportunities at the Cathedral, including support for trade & craft apprenticeships and our longstanding choral music tradition. Through the generosity of individuals, charitable trusts and others, the Trust helps the Cathedral meet the costs of major projects to continue Canterbury’s 1,400 year old story.
The Head of Development holds a strategic management position within the Trust and reports directly to the Executive Director, Strategic Development. S/he will develop and implement a fundraising strategy which will maximise gift and grant income from all sources (UK and internationally) to support the fundraising need of Canterbury Cathedral.
The post holder will have a proven track record of securing annual income, experience of writing effective and compelling applications and experience gained at a similar level. The ability to successfully manage multiple projects from inception to completion and experience of planning, budget setting and monitoring, as well as the ability to work in a complex organisation, will be critical to the success of this post. This role would be an ideal stepping-stone for a successful fundraiser to step into a wider management role.
Key responsibilities will include:
• To further develop and implement the Cathedral’s current individual giving programme and communications strategy for the Trust;
increasing membership at all levels and expanding the philanthropic income generated
• Maintaining accurate account records and controls and cash flow analysis
• To continuously monitor and evaluate development activities , and in discussion and agreement with the Executive Director, Strategic
Development, taking corrective action or enhancing them when necessary
• Maintaining GDPR compliance
• Line management of the Development team
