Job Title: Handyperson- Escort / Fabric OperativeLocation: HMP East Sutton Park-Maidstone
Contract: Temporary 39 hours per week- Monday to Friday

About the Role
We are seeking a reliable and proactive Handyperson- Escort / Fabric Operative to support the safe and efficient running of a busy site environment. This varied role combines hands-on maintenance tasks with escorting duties, ensuring both the estate and the individuals on-site are safe, secure, and well supported.
You will carry out a range of repairs and general maintenance as well as oversee, supervise, and escort personnel and contractors in line with strict security procedures.

Key Responsibilities
General Maintenance & Fabric Tasks

Changing light bulbs and ensuring fixtures/fittings are in good working order.
Carrying out minor plumbing, carpentry and general repairs.
Cleaning and clearing general areas as required.
Moving and assembling furniture and equipment.
Footpath and exterior maintenance across seasons.
Painting, decorating, gutter clearing, and basic building fabric repairs.
Changing filters on air-conditioning units.
Installing noticeboards and completing basic property upkeep.

Escorting & Security Duties

Escorting and supervising technical contractors in line with local security procedures.
Maintaining regular radio communications.
Performing security checks and search procedures when required.
Overseeing and chaperoning individuals to ensure they remain within designated areas safely and lawfully.
Maintaining order, conducting incident response, and applying approved physical control techniques where necessary.
Supporting vulnerable individuals and contributing to safeguarding and wellbeing initiatives.
Maintaining accurate records, writing reports, and supporting documentation processes.

Skills & Experience
Essential:

Experience using hand and power tools.

What you'll need to succeed

You will need to be honest, hard-working, reliable, trust-worthy and have great attention to detail, alongside being an excellent team player. All training will be provided for you on site when you start. Therefore, previous experience in the role is not necessary.
All applicants who are interested in the position must pass Prison Clearance, which can take approximately 4 to 6 weeks. Once passed, this is valid for 5 years and can be transferred to any other prisons of a similar category.

Experience and Training
*No formal qualifications are required.
*Successful applicants will ideally have a background in security or something similar but full training will be provided.
*All applicants must be able to provide details of 2 satisfactory references.
*All applicants must have indefinite leave to remain in the UK.
*All applicants must be willing to undergo security clearance and identity checks.
*Full training is provided by the establishment. Training time will be paid at the standard hourly rate.
