We are looking for an individual to join our team as an Assistant IT Operations Engineer, who will help manage and maintain our network. You will be joining a large and vibrant team where you will have a variety of development opportunities to support you in your career. This is a fixed term position until June 2024, covering a member of staff on secondment to another position.

Who are we looking for:

The ideal person could be someone who has worked in IT Support or System Administration for a few years and is looking to further their career by specialising in networking. With around 1000 network switches, over 2000 wireless access points and 4500 study bedrooms on site, there is plenty to do.

We are looking for people with a knowledge of IT administration, but also good customer service & communication skills and good organisational skills.

More about the role:

The role will be in the IT Operations Team, collaborating with front line services, development teams and other technicians. The assistant role will see you performing a lot of the on-the-ground work out in a variety of locations around campus, and supporting directly students with connectivity problems in their bedrooms. You will also provide help and general advice to staff and students across the University.

Once established in the role, we will support the holder in gaining the skills required to gain greater skills and progress their career in networking and system administration.

About the team and role benefits:

The network team is a subset of the IT Operations Team which is responsible for the day to day running of the University’s core infrastructure. We have 5 key areas, IT Security, Windows Servers, Office 365, Linux Servers and Networking. While the post holder will concentrate on Networking, opportunities will be available to undertake work and gain knowledge in other areas.

The team operates a relaxed flexible working environment, designed to put people, family and a healthy work life balance first. The role is 35 hours per week (usually 7 hours per day), includes 30 days holiday, plus public holidays and an additional 5 days over Christmas and New Year when the University is closed.

The University and working environment

Based on the Canterbury Campus we have a beautiful open and green working environment with large areas of grass and woodland. The campus is packed with wildlife such as rabbits, foxes, kestrels, green woodpeckers and a wide variety of song birds. We have a wide range of shops, restaurants, bars and cafes in easy reach. It is not uncommon to hold meetings outside on picnic tables or in the adjacent Gulbenkian Café.

With a well equipped sports centre and gym onsite, along with various sporting groups, singing groups and many other social groups for staff, it makes the University Of Kent a unique and special place to work.
